Getting Started

Pre-Start Setup

01. Getting Started

Before getting into the course it’s important to get the right hardware configuration and install the correct software. This part of the guide will go over these basic requirements.

02. Recommended Hardware Configurations

We have put a lot of research and effort into choosing machine specifications that are both cost effective to purchase and are powerful enough to get the job done without incurring extra costs by slowing down artists. See below for our recommended maximum and minimum specifications.

Hardware Component Minimum Recommended
CPU Intel i5 8400  Intel i7 8700 or higher
Discrete Graphics Card (GPU) NVIDIA GTX 1060 GTX 1080 or higher
RAM 16 GB 32 GB or higher
Hard Drive 1 TB HDD 500 GB or higher SSD +1 TB or higher HDD
Monitors 21” LCD, 1920 x 1080 px Two 24”+ LCDs, 2560 x 1440 px or higher
Operation System Windows 10 Windows 10

03. Installing 3ds Max

At Wayfair we are currently using 3DS Max 2016. To submit files to us you must be using 2016 because older versions of 3DS Max cannot open files generated by newer versions of the software. When you purchase 3DS Max you will be able to download the last three years of software – so if you buy 2018 you will also be able to download 2017 and 2016.

To install 3DS Max 2016, log into your Autodesk account on the Autodesk webpage. Click on the icon of the person’s head and go to “Manage products & downloads”.

Then  click the arrow icon next to 3DS Max. You will get a list of the available licenses you have. Select 2016 and download! Follow these official instructions from Autodesk to install if you have issues.

04. Installing V-Ray

Once 3DS Max is installed you also need to install V-Ray, the render engine that we use. V-Ray is what turns 3D models into photorealistic images using lighting and materials. To install V-Ray, log into your account on the official V-Ray website and find the relevant 3DS Max plugin (below). Then you can follow these official instructions from Chaos Group to install it.

06. Starting 3ds Max for the First Time

When you first start 3DS Max you will be given the choice between two different 3DS Max settings templates: Design and Classic. We recommend that you use Classic.

07. Installing the Required Plugins

Below are the plugins for 3ds Max that Wayfair requires (besides V-Ray and the proprietary Wayfair plugin). These are only plugins you may use for Wayfair models.

  • Bercon Maps
  • MultiTexture (free version)
  • FloorGenerator (free version)
  • Forest Pack (free version)
  • RailClone (free version)
  • Substance plugin

Here is how to download and install them:

Bercon Maps

Bercon maps is a free open-source plugin by Jerry Ylilammi. It includes 5 maps. We strongly advise one of them, Bercon Noise, to create procedural texture maps using random patterns.

1. Go to: https://github.com/Bercon/BerconMaps/tree/master/src/DLL
2. Find the filename corresponding with your version of 3ds Max, right-click, and save the file.

3. Navigate to the /plugins/ folder of your 3DS Max install. By default that would be C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max\plugins if you installed the 64 bit version of 3DS Max (recommended) or C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\3ds Max\plugins if you installed the 32 bit version.
4. Copy/paste the .dlt file into this directory and restart 3DS Max. Bercon Maps will then show up in the available maps list of the Material Editor.

MultiTexture

1. Create a free account at https://cg-source.com/ and log in.
2. Go to https://cg-source.com/MultiTexture and click the Download button.
3. Open the downloaded .zip file, find the .dlt file that corresponds with your version of 3ds Max, and copy that .dlt file.
4. Paste that .dlt file into the /plugins/ folder of your 3DS Max install. By default that would be C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max\plugins if you installed the 64 bit version of 3DS Max (recommended) or C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\3ds Max\plugins if you installed the 32 bit version. Restart 3ds Max.

FloorGenerator

1. Create a free account at https://cg-source.com/ and log in.
2. Go to https://cg-source.com/FloorGenerator and click the Download button for “Free Version.”

Forest Pack

1. Create a free account at https://www.itoosoft.com/
2. Go to https://www.itoosoft.com/forestpack and click the “Download Now” button, then click the “Download Free” button. Direct link is https://www.itoosoft.com/lite/forestpack
3. Make sure 3ds Max is closed, then run the ForestPackLite624_x64.exe file that you downloaded, follow the prompts, and restart 3ds Max.

Railclone

1. Create a free account at https://www.itoosoft.com/
2. Go to https://www.itoosoft.com/railclone and click the “Download Now” button, then click the “Download Free” button. Direct link is https://www.itoosoft.com/lite/railclone
3. Make sure 3ds Max is closed, then run the RailCloneLite413.exe file that you downloaded, follow the prompts, and restart 3ds Max.

Substance plugin

1. Go to https://docs.substance3d.com/integrations/legacy-support-157351963.html or https://forum.substance3d.com/index.php/topic,14223.0.html
2. Download substance-3ds-max-updater-2.0.1.exe
3. Make sure 3ds max is closed, then follow the instructions on the page to install the Substance plugin and follow the installer’s prompts onscreen.
Note that this plugin says it is for 3ds Max version 2017. It will work in 3ds Max version 2018. Future versions of the Substance plugin include functionality that our render farm does not support, so we advise using this older version.

Other MaxScripts

For creating models, you can use any MaxScripts you want as long as they are not scripted plugins – that is, as long as the only file they use is the MaxScript file itself, and don’t depend on any additional files being present.
